Mouth breathing really does drop work efficiency
The disadvantages of mouth breathing go beyond just concentration
When you breathe in air directly through your mouth, exhaust fumes, dust, viruses and other particles enter your body more easily, which can lead to weakened immunity and allergic symptoms. Additionally, your mouth tends to dry out more easily, increasing the risk of cavities, bad breath, and gum disease.
Furthermore, shallow breathing doesn't allow you to use your diaphragm properly, which means you end up using your shoulder and neck muscles excessively, leading to shoulder and neck stiffness. The point we mentioned before about "shallow breathing leading to shoulder stiffness" applies here as well.
Nasal breathing has a "filter function"
By breathing through your nose, you can humidify and warm the air appropriately, and the mucous membranes and hairs in your nose remove dirt and bacteria, protecting your trachea and lungs. With mouth breathing, this function doesn't work, putting greater strain on your throat and lungs.
Check your own breathing
If any of the following applies to you, there's a high possibility you're breathing through your mouth.
• Is your mouth slightly open?
• Is your tongue positioned against your lower teeth?
During desk work, your mouth tends to open more when you're concentrating. Check yourself when you suddenly notice it.
Measures you can take starting today
① Consciously close your mouth
During desk work, your mouth tends to open when you're concentrating. Develop a habit of closing your mouth when you suddenly notice it.
② Perform the abdominal breathing we introduced before through your nose
When practising abdominal breathing, being conscious of breathing in through your nose and exhaling through your mouth will also help establish a nasal breathing habit.
Summary
Mouth breathing shouldn't be underestimated as "just having your mouth open". During desk work when you want to maintain concentration, try to be conscious of nasal breathing.
